Toyota built its reputation and success on reliability. The recent events with Toyota's accelerator and brake problems magnify the importance of continuous improvement and not just standing on reputation alone. Continuous quality control and process improvement need to be focal points for manufacturers to be competitive and sustainable. The Center for Innovation (COI) for Manufacturing helps Georgia's manufacturers connect to the tools they need to improve process control and address inefficiencies. We do some of this through the Lean Six Sigma Certification Program we are supporting at technical colleges across the state. We can also link you to resources that can assist in implementing these principals into your operation. Click here for more information about COI for Manufacturing.

Gashopper Featured in Georgia Magazine
Posted on Dec 22, 2009 by John Zegers, Director COI for Manufacturing |
One of our projects, The Gashopper, was featured in the November issue of Georgia Magazine. In the magazine's "Made in Georgia" section, they highlighted Georgia products that showcased small-business ingenuity. It's great to see the Gashopper get state-wide recognition for its innovation. Please see below for the entire article. On the horizon Imagine getting around town in a vehicle that requires only a motorcycle license to drive on the street. That's the Gashopper. While taking it on interstates might not be prudent, as it hits a top speed of only 40 mph, its gas consumption of 80 miles per gallon could make it the perfect vehicle for short missions around town. The Georgia Institute of Technology, The Center of Innovation for Manufacturing and the Georgia Department of Economic Development are interested in the future of this sporty little vehicle, the brainchild of Marietta's Frank Boulton and his son Michael of Moto America. (Father and son import the Zolfe, a snazzy British sports car.) The Boulton's tout the Gashopper's car-like handling and its ability to seat two people side-by-side, plus an optional add-on for storage space. Painted in bright colors, the vehicle has a wide, tall street presence and provides more safety than a scooter, as well as weather protection and seatbelts. Its optional features include 12-volt power outlets, iPodĀ® connector, snap-in speaker dock, lockable storage containers and cup holders. Its projected base sales price of $3,000 could bring it to a wide audience looking for inexpensive, reliable, weather-protected daily transportation. source:georgiamagazine.com
